Accessible, well-designed -- this is the book you want

This book does a fabulous job of making the art of chalk lettering and illustration accessible. As she says, you don't need good handwriting to do this -- it's a different skill from that. And she shows, step by step, how to do it. It's very simple and easy, the way she shows it! The chalkboards that come with the book are useful as well, though it only took me a couple of days to buy an additional chalkboard so that I could practice without having to flip pages in the book all the time. I'm attaching a picture to show what I was able to do after going through this book. If you want to learn chalkboard art, this is a great book to start with!

Has it all - how to letter, how to embellish, how to make a complete design with words, frames and doodles.

I was looking for a good book on typography so that I could use it in my art journals. I looked through every book I could find in various book stores on typography - calligraphy, advertising design, ect and I couldn't find a book that showed how to design letters. Most of them were not helpful because they contained only one or two lessons and then a ton of empty pages for you to practice on (that's what my notebook and scratch paper is for - thank you very much). Then I came across this book and every single page was full of something to learn. She starts out slowly explaining 3 types of basic font (now I know what serif and sans serif means) and then shows different ways to embellish the basic fonts to make them fancier. Then she moves into warping the font (ie writing the letters in a arc, or slanting upward or downward. There is detailed discussion on how to draw more attention to some words within a phrase so that they catch the reader's eye by making them bigger or bolder or shaded. After you get the hang of lettering she moves into working a full design - frames, banners, laurel vines, snowflakes, arrows, stars, swirls ect combined with lettering. This was exactly the book I was looking for - how to letter, how to emphasize words within a phrase and then how to put it all together into a complete design. I like that the book has plenty of pictures to show you how to do it, but doesn't skimp on the written instruction either. The book is jam packed with info and low on useless filler material as I've seen in some of the other typography books. Worth every penny and can be applied to more than making chalk board signs.

I've been wanting to up my game with calligraphy and chalk lettering... This is one of the best books out there. Pretty on the outside, even more gorgeous on the inside. Don't even bother ordering on PDF. It comes with 3 very useful Chalkboards for practicing. How awesome is that?! Now to the juicy stuff... It has e-very-thing! What tools you need, how to prepare your chalkboard for battle, typography 101 courses, lots and lots of styles and tips to achieve your lettering goals... Imma go play with it because it is addictive. Do yourself a favor; order it now.

Pleasantly Surprised!

I checked this out at the library more with a view to understanding the process of composition than to set out to compose. With the little bit of theory I have (Grade 5) and with the author's insights on creating melodies, I was able to compose two short pieces for piano. They sound pretty good, too! I am working on a third piece, and have just placed an order for this book.
Miller writes in a nice, lucid style, and makes the process of composing seem quite do-able. I gravitated to creating the melody first and then harmonizing it, but Miller acknowledges that many people might prefer to start with a chord progression, and shows you how to compose in this way as well.
It's helpful to have trained one's ear (the Paul Harris books and Musicians' Institute publication are very good) and to have 2-3 years of playing under one's belt. By that time you've seen enough scores and done enough theory to be up and running after a perusal of this book. It's also a good idea to work through the exercises - I do mean to do start doing the exercises, but couldn't help writing up more than just 4-8 measures of a melody line.

A little trick to make it work...

Michael Miller's book is an excellent source guide and teacher for learning to compose music. Simple as that. The trick, however, is to actually do and practice what he suggests. This is not a volume intended for a would-be composer to read through and then expect to be a composer when done with the reading.

Every suggestion, every exercise has a specific purpose. When you come upon a suggestion or an exercise, stop reading and work on it. Make a project out of it so as to really learn the process, the idea, the reason behind it. Unless the would-be composer takes the time to actually do the work, he or she simply will not develop his or her skills as they otherwise would. And will.

I have been composing and arranging for quite some time but just when I thought I had made another purchase not exactly worthwhile, I had another thought to just stop and do what Mr. Miller suggests. What a difference!

This book is not the only means to an end. But it has much to offer in developing skills, learning the theory behind composing, and great suggestions for enhancing what you already have in your arsenal.

Take the time to do what Mr. Miller says. You will grow. You will learn. And you will find your work enhanced and maturing. This little trick can make a big difference.

This is a great book if you have an intermediate understanding of music theory and an interest in the inner workings of composition. Just be clear to note that this book does not address songwriting. It is packed full of the backbones of songwriting like structure, harmony, rhythm and melody but it does not apply it to a pop music media. Reading this book will give you a good grasp of how these things come together to form a composition but if you're looking to learn about the art of writing a song then it is best you look elsewhere.

It is an easy read and has tons of examples. There is no accompanying CD so if you cannot sight read, the examples probably won't help you. If this sounds like you, reading a basic music theory book beforehand would be a wise choice.

About the Author
Abdullah Yusuf Ali (1872 – 1953) was an Indian Islamic scholar who translated the Qur-an into English. His translation of the Qur-an is one of the most widely known and used in the English-speaking world. Ali was born in Bombay, British India to a wealthy merchant family with a Dawoodi Bohra father. As a child, Ali received a religious education and, eventually, could recite the entire Qur-an from memory. He spoke both Arabic and English fluently. He studied English literature and studied at several European universities, including the University of Leeds. He concentrated his efforts on the Qur-an and studied the Qur-anic commentaries beginning with those written in the early days of Islamic history. Yusuf Ali’s best-known work is this book The Holy Qur-an: Text, Translation and Commentary, begun in 1934 and published in 1938 by Sh. Muhammad Ashraf Publishers in Lahore, British India (that was liberated as Pakistan in 1947). While on tour to promote his translation, Ali helped to open the Al-Rashid Mosque, the third mosque in North America, in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, in December 1938.

I'm a non-Muslim with an open mind.

This is a good edition for anyone who wants to see the Quoran. I do not want the US to get into a religious war (a WWIII) based on theology so I wanted to be better informed about the Muslim world and their holy text. Basically the book is great, the Quor-an speaks highly about the other prophets, specifically Jesus. David Kent Ballast, FAIA, NCARB, CSI, is the owner of Architectural Research Consulting, a firm offering information and management services to architects, interior designers, and the construction industry. Mr. Ballast taught interior construction and other courses for twenty years at Arapahoe Community College. A licensed architect in Colorado and an NCIDQ certificate holder, Mr. Ballast has authored many books published by PPI on design topics and ARE review.

Steven E. O’Hara, PE, is a professor of architectural engineering in the School of Architecture at Oklahoma State University. Professor O’Hara earned bachelor of science and master of architectural engineering degrees from Oklahoma State University. He is a licensed engineer in Oklahoma.

The Architect Registration Examination (ARE) 5.0 has launched on November 1, 2016 and been updated and structured into 6 standalone exam divisions, namely, Practice Management, Project Management, Programming & Analysis, Project Planning & Design, Project Development & Documentation, and Construction & Evaluation. This ARE 5 Review Manual is the first study manual to hit the market and provides comprehensive coverage for the ARE 5 exams. This is a massive, soft-cover book, clocking in at over 1,000 pages and weighing in at 5.2 lbs.

The book is organized into the 6 main sections that closely follow the 6 exam divisions, so that you can focus on the subject matters that you'll need to master for the individual exams. The review materials are thorough and in-depth, and filled with examples and illustrations as well as advice, tips and strategies on how to take the exams. I also find the clean layout and bi-color printing particularly enjoyable to read and study.

This review manual is best used along with the other two companion books from the same publisher - ARE 5 Practice Exam and ARE 5 Practice Problems. The price tags for these books are hefty but the review manual in particular is a worthy investment. It serves well as a study resource before the exams and a reference manual afterwards.

Having both the Ballast and Kaplan versions is popular, but Ballast wins in accuracy.

Covers 6 divisions; Practice management, Project Management, Programming & Analysis, Project Planning & Design, Project Development & Documentation, and Construction & Evaluation. It is a huge book of 1088 pages and weighing in at 5.2 pounds. It seemed heavier than that so I put it on the digital scale, sure enough 5.2. It comes with a hefty price tag but for a book that you can use for a lifetime it is more than a worthwhile investment. Unfortunately you really do need the supplemental books by the author which themselves are a bit expensive. Fortunately it is a popular practice to sell the supplemental books used when done with them. With the hefty price tag there is a really good demand for them. This review manual for the ARE is often kept though as a long term reference.

The back of the book has a vast index so every terms is referenced. This makes it a consortium of easily accessible information for every topic. It is basically a dry read, after all it is a technical manual. The Ballast book here is often preferred because it is more focused and accurate over the Kaplan which is known for blatant errors. However having both is popular because each provides some unique content.

Bravo, Ms. Nielsen!

When I hear the 1960s, I associate the decade with Neil Armstrong and his stepping on the moon, JFK’s assassination, lots of classic TV shows, and even my parents’ childhood. For other people, they can probably only associate one thing with the 1960s – that fateful day Berlin was divided and the Wall that continued to haunt their lives for 28 years. I remember learning about the Berlin Wall and Reagan's famous quote in social studies; yet, I never pursued reading any further information. A Night Divided was the first historical fiction I read on the subject and I must say Ms. Nielsen does a fantastic job with drawing the readers into this ghastly point in history.

Gerta, her brother Fritz, and their mother wake up one morning to find a fence separating them from West Berlin but more tragically, from their father and other brother who went to West Berlin only 2 days before. The book is told by Gerta, who struggles under the oppressiveness of the GDR while attempting to dig a tunnel to the other side with hopes to unite her divided family. Gerta’s voice is strong and mature for a 12 year old girl as her circumstances force her to grow up before her time. Her courage and will to be free are admirable while her struggle to forgive and understand the world’s cruelties is plausible.

I must warn potential readers that you will not want to put this book down. From the first page, it is nonstop and Nielsen keeps you on edge with each new plot development (we fans know she is an expert at this!). Working and even sleeping got in my way of finishing this book sooner than I actually did. The provided historical pictures and map prior to the story prepare the readers for the somber yet hopeful mood of the book and many of the quotes at each chapter’s beginning will stay with you. A Night Divided is a book that should be read by every historical fiction fan and every social studies classroom. I think it is safe to say that Nielsen is wonderful at writing fantasy and historical fiction!

About the Author
Siroj Sorajjakool is professor of religion, psychology, and counseling at Loma Linda University and pastoral counseling supervisor at Loma Linda and at Claremont School of Theology. He has a Ph.D. in theology and personality from Claremont School of Theology. He has published extensively in Thai and English.

Valuable resource for holistic care

As one who has only begun the journey into understanding the complexity of caring for the whole person, this book has become for me a very valuable resource. I found the book to be very well structured, easy to read, and easy to apply to real clinical practice. As an introduction, the book does cover a wide range of topics related to the field, but does so consitently with illuminating case examples, and practical suggestions. The book has both stimulated my thinking in regards to spirituality, health, and wholeness, and has also encouraged me to apply these concepts; to find "where the rubber meets the road" for clinical ministry. I am sure this will join my many dog-eared and well-worn books treasured within my personal library.

This is a book for general mental health professionals who treat people with borderline personality disorder (BPD). It offers practical guidance on how to help people with BPD with advice based on research evidence. After a discussion of the symptoms of BPD, the authors review all the generalist treatment interventions that have resulted in good outcomes in randomised controlled trials, when compared with specialist treatments, and summarise the effective components of these interventions. The treatment strategies are organised into a structured approach called Structured Clinical Management (SCM), which can be delivered by general mental health professionals without extensive additional training.

The heart of the book outlines the principles underpinning SCM and offers a step-by-step guide to the clinical intervention. Practitioners can learn the interventions easily and develop more confidence in treating people with BPD. In addition, a chapter is devoted to how to help families - an issuecommonly neglected when treating patients with BPD. Finally the authors discuss the top 10 strategies for delivering treatment and outline how the general mental health clinician can deliver these strategies competently.

Anthony W. Bateman is Consultant Psychiatrist and Psychotherapist, Halliwick Unit, Barnet, Enfield, and Haringey Mental Health Trust, Visiting Professor University College, London and Consultant to the Anna Freud Centre, London. He developed mentalization based treatment with Peter Fonagy for borderline personality disorder and studied its effectiveness in research trials. An adapted version is now being used in other psychiatric disorders and in the treatment of families and adolescents. He was an expert member of National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE) development group for treatment guidelines for Borderline Personality Disorder in UK. He is President of the European Society for the Study of Personality Disorders (ESSPD).

He has authored several books including 'Psychotherapy for Borderline Personality Disorder: Mentalization based treatment' and 'Mentalization Based Treatment for Borderline Personality Disorder: A practical guide' (with Peter Fonagy).

Roy Krawitz is a psychiatrist and Honorary Clinical Senior Lecturer (Auckland University) specializing for the last 20 years in working with people with borderline personality disorder (BPD), and is a director and trainer of a company providing DBT training. Roy has published research demonstrating the effectiveness of his generalist borderline personality disorder trainings (125 two-day trainings), the clinical effectiveness of his past therapy, and the clinical effectiveness of the DBT service in which he works. Roy is the author of 14 scientific articles and 5 other books on BPD (including client and clinician guides published by Oxford University Press in four languages in total).

Though this book is written for clinicians, it is very helpful and easily readable for family members. It is compassionate, clear in the explanations of the symptoms and treatment of BPD, and the comments from people with BPD and those who are their carers add much to the understanding of this illness. As a mother of someone with BPD I especially appreciate the fact that there is no criticism or blame of parents having caused the illness, rather an explanation of "poorness of fit" of parenting a child with BPD. There is an excellent handout for carers, which, with permission from the authors, can be made available to carers on how they can help their family member.
Highly recommended for all involved with BPD.

A great review, extremely useful for all health care providers who, per the nature of their work will encounter these patients. A book that provide all of us with tools to better manage, be less afraid and be more compassionate towards so many whose sufferings can so improve when offered the right approach and tools.
