About the Author

Lisa R. Jackson-Cherry, Ph.D., LCPC, NCC, is the department chair and a professor in the Department of Counseling at Marymount University and director of the clinical mental health counseling and pastoral counseling programs with primary teaching responsibilities in clinical supervision, crisis intervention, and pastoral integration. Her research and clinical practice areas include crisis intervention and planning, risk assessment, and treating complicated grief and addressing mental health issues of the military and children of fallen law enforcement officers. She is also a member of the Maryland Board of Professional Counselors and Therapists.

Bradley T Erford, Ph.D., LCPC, NCC, is a professor in the school counseling program at Loyola University with primary teaching responsibilities in assessment, research, and lifespan development. He has held numerous professional leadership positions and published numerous books, articles and book chapters.

A Practical Tool

As a counseling grad student I find this book extremely helpful and practical. Many of our books are theoretical in nature but this seems to be something which, if implemented, will give me some useful and practical real-life tools to address crisis situations. I plan to go back through it when class is done and outline a plan of action in preparation for each type of crisis that may well present in session. It lists the types of people that a counselor will need as resources and referrals in the community and I can make those connections while I am learning the material rather than being caught entirely by surprise in the moment once I'm up and running. The advice seems well balanced and considers several ways of dealing with the same difficulties.

The total package for crisis counseling competency!

This text is relevant, comprehensive and hailed as such by my graduate students. Engaging them in critical thinking and synthesis of assessment, intervention and prevention topics is evocative yet necessary to prepare them for a crisis event. I found the Jackson-Cherry text particularly useful in initiating that process.

Content Wondeful! Kindle version buggy.

The content of the book is extremely helpful. It's concise, well organized, well written, and full of all the right information needed for my introduction to crisis intervention now and saving it as a great reference book for later.

Having said that, I wish I had ordered the physical book. The Kindle version is buggy. It crashes frequently and has to be reopened from the very beginning of the text. This makes flipping through the text and looking for information on the fly very difficult and frustrating.

I'm running Kindle for Desktop in Windows 7 on an Intel i3 laptop. I've never had this problem before now. Additionally, for some odd reason Kindle for Desktop is the only place I can open the text. Not on my phone, not on the web, and not on my older Kindle keyboard. It's odd and not an issue the authors should have to fix.

Great for Getting to the Next Level

I've been a pretty basic Excel user since I started taking finance and accounting courses to supplement my math degree. But I've never really needed to do anything besides using the sum function and doing some quick calculations--and honestly, I had no idea how much more there was that Excel could do without getting into VBA coding.

I checked out a few other books, and most of the things I found were either way too basic--teaching you how to use Excel as a calculator and walking you through data entry--or assumes were are already a hard-core power user who needs to dive into VBA. Neither of these really fit me. It walks you through the use and uses for the major functions--with plenty of examples and a ton of downloadable spreadsheets through the companion websites--before moving onto things like arrays (I thought that was just a MatLab thing!), pivot tables, goal seek, and linear and non-linear regressions, before finishing off with some chapters applying it all to finance. I haven't gone through the finance chapters yet, so I can't say that I won't revise my review downward if those chapters aren't as good, but if I do I doubt it will be more than just one star.

My only complaint is that it can be a little light on explanations. I don't always know why something is working the way it is, or why something won't work the I assume it should be. As an example, I was struggling to work through a problem using logical operators with arrays. With a little Googling I found that Excel is very limited handling logical operators with arrays. The book never told me this, and I haven't found a real good explanation as to why this is yet.

I'm using a slightly older version of Excel--2007, and I have only run into a couple things that haven't worked. There are a couple of functions that are in 2013 that are not in 2007, but I have been able to VBA codes online that create that function. Overall, I'm very happy with this and plan on moving on to either Mr Excel's VBA and Macros or Power Programming with VBA.

Thorough and comprehensive

I haven't yet found a question that this guide doesn't resolve. The TOC and Index have been invaluable in quickly locating topics. I thought I knew Excel well (18 years experience in training, assessing and supporting it), but almost from the outset I started learning new tips and tricks. I'm also finding out what I don't know. The book is written in "layman's" terms, and there've been many a Sunday afternoon where I read this for relaxation rather than a novel. If that makes me a nerd, so be it!

A relatively good book on how to get into Excel, for beginners. The thing with Excel is that, once you get your feet wet, there's no need for books, because every possible question is answered online by others who encountered the same question or challenge before you did. Then again, anything that lowers the initial threshold into this powerful program is a good thing, so three stars.

This was a good audio. It reminded me of a few areas I needed to review before taking the test.

After attending a bootcamp,I used this audio, the PMBOK, and a couple of phone apps(PMP Summary, ITTO Game by XSense). I passed on the first attempt.

I wish I could have purchased it to load on my phone. I had to pick up a portable player to carry it around. The phone could have gone with me for walks, etc.

This text is an attempt to review and synthesize the current state of knowledge in dysphagia in relation to both where the profession has been and where it is going and needs to go in the evaluation and treatment of oropharyngeal dysphagic patients. The first edition of this book was based on my experiences with 5,000 dysphagic patients. This second edition utilizes my experience with over 20,000 dysphagic patients. At least 50% of this text is new, when compared with the 1983 edition. There are additional chapters on swallow assessment procedures and on clinical decision making in treatment of dysphagic patients, as well as information on the influence of voluntary swallowing maneuvers on dysphagic patients, the effects of head injury and dementia on swallowing function, and a number of other topics. In addition to these new chapters and topics, there are entirely rewritten sections on normal swallow physiology, new imaging procedures for assessment of swallow, and new treatment procedures. 1 have kept all the relevant aspects of the 1983 text, such as the treatment procedures, and have added and expanded on those areas that are relatively new since 1983. The book is designed for the clinician interested in evaluation and treatment of swallowing disorders within the context of the total neuromotor control of the upper aerodigestive tract. I believe this book also provides clinicians with a set of evaluation and treat¬ment strategies that are workable in a variety of settings, including the schools. As dysphagia has grown in recognition, children and adults with dysphagia are being treated in a variety of settings; this is further encouraged by the changes put in place in the health care system.

Cool, classy, articulate, and brilliant--rarely do all of those adjectives apply at once to an astrophysicist. But Neil de Grasse Tyson is no ordinary scientist; as the director of New York City's Hayden planetarium, his job is to inspire the public with the beauty and grandeur of the universe, just as he was inspired there in his youth. The Sky Is Not the Limit is his memoir of the events leading from his birth to his acceptance of his dream job and beyond, and is a marvelously entertaining look at one man's pursuit of his life's calling. Tyson emphasizes the nurturing roles played by his parents, friends, and teachers, in contrast to the sometimes well-meaning but always disappointing discouragement he experienced from all sides in his quest for his Ph.D.

Of course, it's still shamefully difficult for a black American scientist to merit the same quality of attention as his or her peers, and Tyson's insights into the subtle but still-pervasive racism in academia are enlightening. His description of his own shock at seeing himself on television--a black man sought as an expert on something other than being black--is powerfully moving. Tyson (see One Universe, reviewed above) directs the Hayden Planetarium in New York City. His pleasant, digressive memoir explains how he got there, what it's like to be a famous astronomer and what he thinks of his work. At first it's a story about how science education can go right. We learn that Tyson, who is African-American, grew up among tall buildings in the Bronx--but his is not a story of triumph over grinding poverty. Young Tyson got a break from the city when his father found a one-year lectureship at Harvard, and as for the electricity required to run one of his first telescopes, "my dentist... happened to live on the nineteenth floor." Tyson's later chapters offer memories, anecdotes and musings on astrophysics, education, politics, popular culture and even wrestling, in which Tyson competed until grad school. Tyson explains how his wrestling skills and knowledge of physics helped him end an Italian traffic jam by lifting a parked car, and how he tried to buy a meteorite but lost an auction to Steven Spielberg. In one chapter, Hollywood's science mistakes raise Tyson's ire (the film Titanic got its night sky all wrong); in the next, he discusses getting stopped by police for "Driving While Black." With sentences like "The universe poured down from the sky and flowed into my body," Tyson may not be his discipline's best prose stylist; neither his essays nor his life match the unpredictable charm of Richard Feynman's. But he comes off very likably, and presents physics with ease and clarity. It's easy to imagine his memoir inspiring young future astrophysicists--and inspiring grownups to help them out. (Feb.)

A brief, engaging, sometimes scintillating ramble around the cosmos with Tyson (Astrophysics/Princeton; dir., Hayden Planetarium), who shares his perspectives and experiences as an African-American astrophysicist. From the rooftop of his Bronx apartment building, the nine year-old Tyson could see enough of the night sky to become curious about it. However, it was only after a trip to the sky theater of the Hayden Planetarium, which portrayed many more stars than he could see from his rooftop, that he decided to become an astrophysicist. He tells how he purchased a powerful telescope that enabled him to see the planets close up (including his favorite, Saturn). Later, at an astronomy camp in California, he saw for the first time ``bezillions'' of stars in a sky that resembled that of the Planetarium theater. Tyson describes his experiences as a student at the Bronx High School of Science, Harvard, the University of Texas, and Columbia, makes an eloquent plea for increased scientific literacy, and reflects wryly on his side career as a commentator on astronomy for national television. He also depicts the burdens he's borne (and bears even now) as an African-American: routine questionings at the hands of the police, for instance, and expressions of doubt over his intellectual abilities from strangers (and even colleagues). His conclusion: ``You can be ridden only if your back is bent.'' He comments entertainingly on physics equations and the scientific method, speculates ominously on the prospectnearly certain, to his mindof cataclysmic collisions between the Earth and high-velocity comets or asteroids, and ruminates inconclusively on the search for God in the infinitude of space. A fantastic autobiography!

Okay, I'm gonna admit something here! I have a man-crush on Neil deGrasse Tyson. It's hard not to like anyone who is so knowledgeable and passionate about their chosen field, and when that field is something I am fascinated with myself, well... man-crush. You may have one as well by the time you finish this autobiography! NDT writes in a very personable, easygoing style that is instantly endearing. The way NDT shares his love for astronomy will likely kindle an interest in you by the time you're done reading, if you didn't have any beforehand.
The book is over far too soon, but that's not due to any flaw in the book; you just want to spend more time learning more about NDT and his story. This is a fantastic, but all too brief autobiography of perhaps the greatest current science popularizer. Tyson discusses his early childhood experiences getting hooked on astronomy after a family trip to a planetarium, despite living in the light-polluted big city. He shares some hilarious personal stories, as well as some balanced, thoughtful discussions on touchy subject of race, which come across as informative, personal, and matter-of-fact. There are only two complaints to be made about his book, one, that it is too short! Tyson is a charming, humorous storyteller, and I read this book in two nights and was left wanting more, and two, there is not one single embarrassing baby picture or awkward teenager with bad hair photo in the book! Bottom line, buy this book for yourself, but more importantly, buy this book for your young teens, or watch his new version of Cosmos and read this book at bedtime to your younger children. Inspirational, informative, and thoroughly enjoyable no matter what age, skin tone, education level...just get this book!

Great read

This book is a combination of Neil's life story with a more in-depth version of his science advocacy, too. I enjoyed the stories, and I appreciate all the work he does to get students and the general public engaged in science. I felt like I was seeing astrophysics "through his eyes" by the descriptions and details he included. A good read, and highly relatable since my background is in applied mathematics and physics. I found myself smiling a lot while reading it, except for some of the more emotional stories - which he is somehow able to write with a positive outlook despite the tragedy surrounding him while living in New York during 9/11.

A few oddities: the captions in the kindle version are jumbled, and misspelled. Also, paragraph breaks on the kindle were sporadic. I'd doubt the original text contained any of those errors. I still enjoyed the read :)

Zebra cards are not only funny...

Each of them is an opportunity to train and discuss differential diagnosis and to give a nice surprise when you reverse the card.

The new edition supplemented with "extracts" give a very exciting view of what was and what is Internal Medicine...

A great game to motivate trainees and to satisfy every physician eager of medical knowledge!

Super interesting

If you love medicine, like I do (kind of a hobby) this is a nice little book to peruse. If you're a hypochondriac, probably not a good idea. I found out the T.V. show "House M.D." uses this book and the author for their show. Probably geared towards med students, but a great read and accurate data.

Preparing for the VTNE

I am currently preparing for the VTNE for the second time, with only on the job experience,and this book. It has really helped me learn large animal and improve on my weak points. I feel very confident in taking this next test with the help of co workers and this AMAZING Book!! I will recommend it to anyone looking to take the Exam or just learn, there is amazing information in this book and well worth the money spent!

Textbook gets an A, Workbook gets a C

I bought this textbook and workbook to study independently for the VTNE. They arrived quickly and in perfect condition. The textbook is comprehensive and full of great information. However, the workbook does not come with answers to the questions and puzzles. You must register on the Evolve website, and you must be a student or instructor to gain access to the workbook answers and extra website materials. Students are only given access to answers for the odd numbered workbook questions, and I have found several mistakes in the answers.

A lot of information

This book contains a LOT of information. No joke - it's a lot of reading but it is extremely helpful. Purchased this book for one of my vet tech classes and I think i was one of the few people that did the actual readings assigned. You can only learn so much 'on the job' but this book helps to support why things are done the way they are and it gives excellent references and examples to help explain things. Without this book, I would not have become the veterinary technician I am today. I took the course over 2 years ago and I still reference the book for pertinent information.

In this outrageous parody of a survival guide, Saturday Night Live staff writer Brooks prepares humanity for its eventual battle with zombies. One would expect the son of Mel Brooks to have a genetic predisposition to humor, and indeed, he does, and he exhibits it relentlessly here: he outlines virtually every possible zombie-human encounter, drafts detailed plans for defense and attack and outlines past recorded attacks dating from 60,000 B.C. to 2002. In planning for that catastrophic day when "the dead rise," Brooks urges readers to get to know themselves, their bodies, their weaponry, their surroundings and, just in case, their escape routes. Some of the book's more amusing aspects are the laughable analyses Brooks proposes on all aspects of zombiehood, and the specificity with which he enumerates the necessary actions for survival-i.e., a member of an anti-zombie team must be sure to have with him at all times two emergency flares, a signaling mirror, daily rations, a personal mess kit and two pairs of socks. Comic, though unnecessarily exhaustive, this is a good bet for Halloween gag gifts and fans of Bored of the Rings-esque humor. 100 line drawings.

Learn This Book or Become One of the Undead!

I constantly worry about wide-scale zombie outbreaks. I habitually wonder what I would do, what actions I would take, to protect me and mine when the time comes and we find ourselves caught in the middle of an all out attack by the undead horde. I can't tell you how many nights I've lost sleep due to the thoughts of a zombie uprising. However, I am now able to abate my fear somewhat after thoroughly reading this book more than a dozen times. I cannot thank you enough, Max Brooks, for taking the time to write what I believe to be the world's definitive undead protection manual. The information within this book is more valuable than anything else I have come across.

Before reading The Zombie Survival Guide, I don't know how many times I've been thrown out of Wal-Mart and various flea markets for attempting to dispatch a zombie, only to discover later that it was an actual living person and not a member of the undead. The book greatly helps the reader to differentiate between the two. I have learned that using chainsaws and shotguns are not only loud and attract more undead to my fortified location, but I will eventually run out of fuel and ammo eventually during an ongoing attack - large swords and trench spikes are the quieter way to go, and they never need a refill of gas or bullets! Valuable information that I never gave much thought to before reading the book, and only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the vast amount of zombie combat tactics described within.

This book is indispensable. Don't just thumb through it; study it, learn it, KNOW IT! After all, it's only a matter of time before the living dead rise and attack.

Fits my extremely dry sense of humor to a T

The laugh is that it never drops the image of what it is meant to be: a serious survival guide. On the one hand I found myself laughing at the absurdity of it - like a Christmas story that demands we believe in Santa Claus - and on the other hand I found myself mentally slipping into the idea, and imagining myself in these various situations. Great zone out read on an airplane.

Good time filler

This book is decent reading material to kill time. It still sits in our bathroom where we pick it up to read it occasionally. We have yet to find is the whole thing but not so bad. Bought this for Christmas one year. We have themed Christmas gifts to each other and his was zombies that year.
