Dated, but fantastic

I am a perl and C programmer, and I am very familiar with the shells outlined in this book. So the material was not particularly "new" for me. I can see how it would be difficult to understand for a user who was new to shell programming.
If the intended audience is the intermediate unix user who knows something of programming, this book gets a full 5 star, my seal-of-approval rating. Terrific.
One thing it is lacking is a brief mention of perl or of awk. In many cases, it is simpler to write:
date | awk '{ print $2 }'
instead of:
date | cut -d' ' -f2
or, at least from the standpoint of understandability and readability. but the book doesnt claim to be a manual for awk, and oreilly has an excellent book on the subject.
I continually recommend this book to people, and where ever I go, I find this book on the bookshelves of successful people.

First and only shell programming book I own

I bought this book when it was originally published back in 1990. I started with little programming experience, and no shell programming experience. It brought me up to speed quickly. I no longer write many shell scripts; however, I still use it as a desk reference when I do. For any UNIX system administrator, this book (or one just like it) is essential.
BTW, I have been looking for a better book all these years and haven't found one. It's not that I think this book is perfect, rather there just aren't many good books on this subject.

Somewhat dated....

Although published in 1990, this book could still function well as an introduction to UNIX and (Bourne) shell programming, provided one is aware of some changes to the shell in most implementations of UNIX since that date. Also, the Perl language has come on strong in recent years, and depending on your tastes (and time), that language can be used with great efficiency to do the tasks that are traditionally done in the shell.
After a quick review of the basics of UNIX, the authors give a purely descriptive explanation of the UNIX shell in chapter 3. Emphasizing that it is an interpretive language, the most commonly used shell commands are discussed in chapter 4, starting with a discussion of regular expressions. The cut, paste, sed, tr, grep, uniq, and sort commands are treated in detail.
In chapter 5, one begins the actual task of creating shell programs using shell variables. There is no data typing in the shell, so values can be assigned to variables without noting their type as integer, float, etc. The authors only briefly discuss the mechanism in shell programming. The method by which the shell interprets quotation characters is covered in the next chapter. The single, double, backslash, and back quote characters are discussed in detail. Noting that arithmetic operations are done on values stored in variables in the shell, the authors show to proceed with these operations using the expr program.
The mechanisms for passing arguments to shell programs is treated in chapter 7, the authors showing how to write shell programs that take arguments typed on the command line. The role of positional variables for delaying assignment after normal command line processing is discussed. The $#, and $* variables are discussed briefly, with $# getting set to the number of arguments typed on the command line and $* used for programs taking a variable number of arguments. The shift command is explained well as a method to allow one to use more than nine arguments to a program.
The ability of shell programs to execute decision blocks is treated in chapter 8, via the if statement. The role of the test and exit commands are in if blocks are discussed in good detail. In addition, the case command, familiar to C programmers is introduced as a technique to allow a single value to be compared against other values. The && and || constructs are used to show the reader how to execute commands that are contingent on the success or failure of the preceding command.
Program loops, via the for, while, and until commands are discussed in chapter 9, followed in the next chapter by a discussion of how to read data from the terminal or from a file using the read command. The ability to perform I/O redirection is discussed also.
Local and export variables are discussed in the next chapter on the user environment, and the authors give a good summary of how these work in shell programming. More discussion on parameter passing is done in chapter 12, with the different methods of parameter substitution given detailed treatment. The authors show how to use the $0 variable to check whether two or more programs have been executed, and how to use the set command to set shell options and to reassign positional parameters. This is followed in the next chapter by a discussion of the eval command, which makes the shell scan the command line twice before executing it, and the wait command, which will allow serialization in program execution. The trap and type commands are discussed also.
The Korn shell is discussed in chapter 15, with emphasis on the features added to Korn shell that cannot be found in the Bourne shell. The vi and emacs capability of this shell is briefly discussed in this chapter. The differences between Korn shell functions and Bourne shell functions are discussed in detail by the authors. Most importantly, the ability of the Korn shell to do integer arithmetic without using the expr command is discussed via the let command, which is built-in to the Korn shell. Also, the capability of the Korn shell to support data typing is discussed, along with its pattern matching capabilities. Pattern matching is done most efficiently now using Perl however.

A necessary starting-stone.

Of course, in a vastly changed historical context, bourgeois ideology cannot produce anything approaching the seemingly reactionary facility of the Disney comic (just compare Disney with Buffy, Xena, or other postmodern heroes!). However, anyone trying to understand changes in the ideological outlook of Mass Culture must, of necessity, regard this book as one's unavoidablke starting-stone. That's that.

Valuable - in its own Context

Dorfman and Mattelart's book is based on Donald Duck comics circulated throughout Latin America. Those books were translated and largely re-written by overzealous editors and are more different from than similar to Carl Barks' original comics. Insofar as one is interested in US / Latin American policy, politics and business, it is useful.

Disney's domestic business practives are by no means benign, but Barks is one of the more significant comics artists and enjoyed a much greater degree of creative freedom than most creators of the time. Barks cartooning is fluid and subtle, as is his storytelling.

For an insight into "the Duck Man's" work, check out Donald Ault's much more up-to-date book "Carl Barks: Conversations."

Down with Disney!

It just goes to show that even with the economy on a downturn the CEO of Disney walks away with 75 million dollars and gives the employees the dregs of the disney economy. This book is worth buying for it details the enormity of Diney's propaganda campaign to portray the third world as a place to be exploited. I've never saw such outright villainy as is portrayed in this classic by Dorfman. Disney portrays revolutionaries (in their comic strips) as essentially traitors and the reactionaries, and oligarchs as heroes with Donald Duck, Scrooge McDuck and company as aiding their crimes.

About the Author

For Elaine N. Marieb, taking the student's perspective into account has always been an integral part of her teaching style. Dr. Marieb began her teaching career at Springfield College, where she taught anatomy and physiology to physical education majors. She then joined the faculty of the Biological Science Division of Holyoke Community College in 1969 after receiving her Ph.D. in zoology from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst.

 

While teaching at Holyoke Community College, where many of her students were pursuing nursing degrees, she developed a desire to better understand the relationship between the scientific study of the human body and the clinical aspects of the nursing practice. To that end, while continuing to teach full time, Dr. Marieb pursued her nursing education, which culminated in a Master of Science degree with a clinical specialization in gerontology from the University of Massachusetts. It is this experience, along with stories from the field - including those of former students, now in health careers - that has informed the development of the unique perspective and accessibility for which her texts and laboratory manuals are known.

 

In her ongoing commitment to students and her realization of the challenges they face, Dr. Marieb has given generously to provide opportunities for students to further their education. She contributes to the New Directions, New Careers Program at Holyoke Community College by providing several full-tuition scholarships each year for women returning to college after a hiatus or who are attending college for the first time and would otherwise be unable to continue with their studies without financial support. She funds the E. N. Marieb Science Research Awards at Mount Holyoke College, which promotes research by undergraduate science majors, and generously contributed to the University of Massachusetts at Amherst where she provided funding for reconstruction and instrumentation of a cutting-edge cytology research laboratory that bears her name.

In 1994, Dr. Marieb received the Benefactor Award from the National Council for Resource Development, American Association of Community Colleges, which recognizes her ongoing sponsorship of student scholarships, faculty teaching awards, and other academic contributions to Holyoke Community College. In May 2000, the science building at Holyoke Community College was named in her honor.

 

Additionally, while actively engaged as an author, Dr. Marieb serves as a consultant for the Benjamin Cummings InterActive Physiology® CD-ROM series, and is an active member of the Human Anatomy and Physiology Society (HAPS).

Susan J. Mitchell earned her Ph.D. in physiology from the University of Michigan. She studied the cellular basis of behavior before joining the faculty at Onondaga Community College where she is currently a professor in the Department of Biological Sciences. Her research in neurophysiology and training in physiology positioned her to write the original Nervous, Endocrine, and Digestive System modules in the InterActive Physiology® 9-System Suite tutorial program. She has been honored with a NISOD Excellence Award for teaching, and been awarded several grants to develop technological resources for biology at OCC. Dr. Mitchell is a member of the American Physiological Society, National Association of Biology Teachers, National Science Teachers Association, and the Human Anatomy and Physiological Society, where she is currently active on the Curriculum and Instruction Committee.

Not a very good learning resource

I am currently in an Anatomy and Physiology class that uses this lab manual. I find it overly confusing. It isn't much of a lab manual, it is mostly rehashing the textbook with a couple of procedures thrown in. The PAL disk that comes with it is next to useless. I have only used it once and didn't find that it helped me with the exercises in the manual at all. The manual is arranged in a non-intuitive way, which makes it very hard to follow. The vocabulary and exercises are inconsistent, ranging from high-school level to graduate-level. Overall, this manual ranges from irritating to infuriating. If you are an instructor, find a different book and manual to inflict on your class, PLEASE.

This lab manual was an excellent resource while taking A&P. The lab manual provides practical applications of the fundamental concepts from the textbook which helped to solidify the learning process. The lab manual provides instruction for hands on learning for lab experiments such as dissection of a cat or mouse, which helped me memorize my anatomy. This is a great resource for learning that provides another perspective from simply reading a textbook.

I got the book in 3 business days in brand new condition, thank you. The only thing that I have noticed after getting my purchase and comparing it to my other class mate's books that the human skeleton atlas was missing. But that's OK, now. Otherwise as always, Amazon delivers!

Probably the Best First Book for the Serious Beginning Investor

This is a great first book for the diligent investor. By diligent, I mean a person that actually wants to do the footwork involved with learning how to invest on his or her own and wants to be able to speak the language of the stock market. For the person who is not willing, or simply not interested, in putting in all the work involved in learning how to invest, there are other options out there that may be better, such as financial advisors (if you want the hand-holding and/or don't mind spending more on commissions for the advice) and ETFs (exchange traded funds, which if picked right simply move in tandem with the market). However, even the passive investor could learn a lot from reading or even just skimming through this book.

Kelly begins at square 1 by describing what the stock market even is, and how it functions. He discusses very basic things, such as the difference between a full-service and a self-service broker, and the way that stocks get listed on the exchanges in the first place. His tone and style are welcomed, as he neither presumes that you know anything prior to reading, nor is he paternalistic or presuming that you are incompetent.

Unique to many books, Kelly sums up the philosophy of some of the tried and true "master" investors. His list includes Ben Graham, Phil Fisher, Warren Buffett, Peter Lynch, Will O'Neill, and Bill Miller. By examining multiple investors in the way he does, Kelly truly shows that there is more than one way to successfully invest in the stock market. Graham is the model value investor, focusing on stocks that are undervalued. Phil Fisher is a growth investor, focusing on superior companies that he expects will keep growing. Warren Buffett is a combination of Graham and Fisher, and focuses on buying high-quality companies, among other things. Peter Lynch categorizes companies into different types of stocks and emphasizes fundamental analysis by really checking out the company. Will O'Neill is the epitome of a growth investor and focuses on momentum with his CANSLIM method. And lastly, Bill Miller is a value investor that focuses on contrarian positions, among other things. Kelly's tidbits of interview with Bill Miller are a welcome addition to this edition of the book, mostly because it is difficult to find very much material with Bill Miller's thoughts (the other 5 "masters" have all written their own books). It was a mild disappointment to me that Seth Klarman was not included in the "masters" list, with his focus on absolute return rather than relative return. But all things considered, Kelly presents a fairly comprehensive list of 6 as a base, shows the areas where they agree, and ultimately encourages the reader to learn in their own way from this.

Perhaps most importantly, Kelly goes through the basics of fundamental analysis, which is the way that most of the masters go about analyzing stocks. These included things such as Price to Earnings ratio, Price to Book ratio, Price to Sales ratio, Market Cap, Dividends, Current Ratio, and a few others. He walks the reader through the basics of the income statement, the balance sheet, and the cash flow statement. In going through them, he rightly points out that different people place different emphasis on them and the way that they determine whether to buy a stock. He also points out that fundamental analysis is the way that investors (rather than day traders) evaluate stocks. Kelly also takes note of technical analysis (what day traders typically use), and points out that some people believe the market can be timed with prediction charts, while also not making any conclusion as to whether he thinks that is possible or not.

Kelly gives the reader advice for how to conduct his or her own research when contemplating what stock to buy. This includes gathering information from various websites (such as Yahoo! Finance, Google Finance, fund newsletters, etc.), publications (WSJ, Barron's, IBD, etc.), ratings companies (ValueLine, Morningstar, the S&P, etc.) and the companies themselves. Further, he goes through the steps that the reader should consider regarding when to think about selling the stock, which includes both good reasons and purely emotional ones. Kelly employs a method called the "Fearsome Foursome," which I personally use to this day. It more or less forces the reader to know why they bought, what motivated them to hold or sell, and to look back over time and learn from it.

Last, Kelly discusses how the reader should structure his or her own portfolio of stocks. He lays out a method of averaging in both small and mid-cap stocks, which is helpful for readers who want a good starting point. But ultimately, he encourages the reader to learn to do his or her own due diligence.

This book is not radically different from previous editions. So if you already have the 2010 edition, I'm not sure it'd be worth buying this one too unless you are just an overall fan, want a refresher, or want the tidbit of interview with Bill Miller. It is helpful to anyone that wants to learn more about the stock market as a beginning investor. And it is helpful to the intermediate/advanced investor that would like to just brush up on the basics of analyzing stocks and remembering the way that stocks work. But the book is clearly geared towards the person that actually wants to learn about the stock market and how to analyze and value various stocks on their own accord (rather than be told what to buy). Keeping that in mind, I believe it achieves its purpose. Thus, I give it 5 stars.

A must have for anyone interested in stock investing

I started reading Jason Kelly with his 2012 Edition of this book about a year ago. At that time I had no real experience with investing but wanted to learn. This book was a springboard for me into the world of investing and personal wealth management. Jason does an excellent job in this book explaining theories and concepts that can be very difficult in a simplified and easy to understand way. I wish my college finance & accounting professors were as skilled as Jason.

The book begins where it should, at the beginning. It assumes the audience knows nothing about stocks and how the stock market works. It proceeds to discuss the various metrics investors use to analyze companies, how those values are derived, and why they are relevant. Next Jason discussed the great investors in recent history, how they came to be so successful and what you and I can learn from their strategies. Finally, after giving the reader a base of knowledge and background Jason lays out his strategy for success and why it works. Along the way, the book is sprinkled with great resources and references that have been invaluable to me.

Since reading the 2012 Edition of this book I have been a religious reader of Jason's newsletter found at JasonKelly.com and I look forward to it each Sunday morning with my coffee. I cannot wait to get my 2013 Edition in the mail and look forward to the updated material. Finally, I can personally attest to the Jason's strategies as I have had excellent success in the markets over the last year and greatly outperformed the S&P 500.

Excellent book missing one major discussion

I liked:

- Kelly provides a great system for categorizing and evaluating individual stocks.
- He provides the novice with plain explanations for terms and measurements that they may not have been familiar with.
- He provides references for all recommended research and describes how to find them.
- His writing style is easy to follow and occasionally humorous.

I didn't like:
- Kelly does not address taxes on gains. He provides several strategies that require selling shares on frequent occasions and compares return rates without considering the effect of taxes on those gains. Other investment advice I have read recommends not actively trading stock in this fashion because it is highly unlikely that you will keep up with the market due to your losses from taxes, timing errors, and commissions. I would like to see Kelly address this oversight in the next edition.

Frida Kahlo's cult reputation has been blossoming for over ten years, particularly among feminists. Rumors that Madonna is planning a film about the artist will probably generate mainstream interest in, if not understanding of, her disturbingly personal works. The complexities of Kahlo's painful, joyful, notorious, and gay life are well presented in the text. Despite obvious affection for the subject, Zamora neither glosses over Kahlo's nonconformity nor tries to make a martyr of her. Yet however fair, these biographical notes are sparse and anecdotal, whetting the newcomer's interest but not offering much to the informed reader. More important here is the collection of 75 color plates of the artist's original works. Of interest to the initiated because they comprise largely seldom-seen works in various Mexican collections, these plates represent the best collection now available of Kahlo's work. Recommended for most collections as a companion to Hayden Herrera'a Frida ( LJ 1/15/83), a readable and complete biography.

Great book!

Frida Kahlo is my favorite artist, so of course I love this book. Other reasons I love it: the pictures, which show Frida's exquisite beauty, the paintings (not any I haven't seen, though I still love seeing them), and the story, which told some things I did not know. Although I really like this book, it was not very in-depth. I already knew most of the information that was in it.

Get the Spanish version

This edition is a pretty good overview of Frida's life with some outstanding colorful reproductions of her works. There is also a very satisfying collection of photographs, both in black and white and color, to cure the voyeur in you to see Frida as she really lived. For example, if you enlarge the back cover shot here you can see the cigarette in her left hand that she was apparently usually without. If you thought it was only the pain of her life that resulted in very few photographs of her smiling think again. The results of her heavy smoking habit produced a poor set of teeth that were blackened and not very flaterring; hence the rare smiling picture. The book has some rare photographs, including one of her laughing and her hideous teeth. The text is easy to follow and gives a whirlwind tour of Frida's life, complete with recollections by friends and other anecdotes. Included is a chronology, list of illustrations and a selected bibliography. My big complaint about this book, and it may you serve you if you are able to read Spanish, is that it is a short version of the original. I have run down a copy of the original Spanish book, "Frida: El Pincel de la Angustia" and it is highly recommended over this translated version. I cannot over state this recommendation . This version is almost like an abridged text by comparison. Case in point, the original has nearly four times as many pages! The abundance of pages is not filler either as it has many more photographs, paintings and more importantly, text. If you hunt around you can find the original at an affordable price. All in all this is a good addition, but not edition, to your library on Mexcian Art or personal Frida Kahlo book collection.
