This biography is the story of its author, Susan Glaspell, and the forces that propelled her from her Midwest birthplace in Davenport, Iowa to Greenwich Village during its glory days, where she established herself as a central figure in the avant-garde community and became the first modern American woman playwright. Glaspell's life is a feminist tale of pioneering in which she broke new ground for women. A journalist by age eighteen, she worked her way through university as a news reporter and became a leading novelist of the period. A co-founder of many of Greenwich Village's important avant-garde institutions, she was a close friend of its leading figures, including Eugene O'Neill. She and O'Neill were equally credited with launching a new type of indigenous drama, hers addressing such pressing topics as suffrage, birth control, female sexuality, marriage equality, socialism, and pacifism. In 1931 she won the Pulitzer Prize for drama.

Although little-known today, in her heyday (c. 1910-1940) Susan Glaspell was one of the most notable literary figures of her generation, a best-selling novelist, critically-acclaimed playwright, and a cultural leader of the modernist avant-garde, a legendary circle that shifted geographically from Chicago to New York to Paris, and included playwright Eugene O'Neill, novelists Theodore Dreiser and John Dos Passos, poets Djuna Barnes and Edna St. Vincent Millay, painter Georgia O'Keefe, labor journalists Jack Reed and Mary Heaton Vorse, anarchist activist Emma Goldman, and salon hostess Mabel Dodge Luhan.

In Susan Glaspell: Her Life and Times, author Linda Ben-Zvi provides a thoroughly researched, richly detailed, and imminently readable analysis of Susan Glaspell's professional rise from "society girl" reporting in her native Iowa to Pulitzer-prize winning playwright of international fame, and an equally rich exploration of Glaspell's private life, including her marriage to the charismatic and iconoclastic George Cram ("Jig") Cook and her eight year liaison with writer Norman Matson, seventeen years Glaspell's junior. Ben-Zvi offers critical summaries of all of Glaspell's major works, including her nine novels, eleven plays, and her fascinating, genre-blurring auto/biography, The Road to the Temple.

Born in Davenport, Iowa, in 1876, Susan Glaspell was, as Ben-Zvi writes, a "pioneer" and a "venturesome feminist" in art and life, one of the first generation of American women to embrace socialism, feminism, and self-realization as a woman and a citizen. Glaspell's fictional counterparts, in her novels, short stories, and plays were similarly strong women who "continually pushed against fixed boundaries."

Ben-Zvi, who has published extensively on Glaspell, brings to her analysis a thorough knowledge of the social and aesthetic context within which Glaspell lived and worked. She brings the story of Susan Glaspell to life, and her remarkable account of one woman's remarkable life is highly recommended for anyone interested in Glaspell, women's biography, or American social and cultural history.

About the Author

Linje Manyozo is a Lecturer and Director of the MSc Programme in Media, Communications and Development in the Department of Media and Communications, London School of Economics and Political Science. He has taught development communication in South Africa and Malawi, where in 2005, he successfully proposed and introduced Africa s first ever undergraduate degree programme in development communication at the University of Malawi. He continues to guest-lecture in Europe, as he strongly believes that development communication is even more relevant to the global north. Linje s teaching and research are informed by his upbringing in postcolonial Malawi as well as his work as a development journalist, creating educational communications with marginalized communities. His past and current research examines questions of subaltern representation, voice and authority in development policy formulation and implementation.

And it's SO easy once you understand

After reading dozens of books, taking classes, making all sorts of efforts to understand perspective drawing (and failing!), Stephanie's simple, clear instruction and tips has given me many "aha" moments. Really, why isn't perspective always explained so clearly? Everyone always talks about the vanishing point, but never really explained how to find it. Stephanie does. And it's SO easy once you understand. Everyone talks about foreshortening and converging. Stephanie clearly shows how it works and when to use it.

The book is filled with a wealth of sketches from urban sketchers all over the world - my only small complaint is that some of the drawings are almost too small to see very well. But, the sketches show many different styles and her accompanying analysis of the sketches is SO helpful.....she identifies the horizon or eye-level line and vanishing point in them and draws your attention to all the reasons the perspective works.

The book is small, yet mighty. It's full of pretty pictures, yet educational. It's written simply, yet clearly. It'll be in my sketching bag for quick reference from now on (I've already marked certain passages & folded down pages to return to)!
If you've ever struggled with perspective drawing, this is the handbook for you. If you've ever thought "I wish I could draw a building or landscape and have it look more realistic", this is the book for you. Because I'm here to tell you, Stephanie makes it easy to understand.

Simple and to the point

I took Stephanie's Craftsy class and really enjoyed it. There is some overlap but the book also covers a few extra things like reflections, arches and slopes. It's the first time perspective has ever clicked for me. Simple and to the point. I like that I can refer to things quick and that the topics/examples are succinct.

Great Content; Terrible Font Makes Reading It Difficult

I have given a lot of thought to how to review this book. The content is excellent and the author deserves five stars, The publisher, however, made a terrible decision regarding the font, the font size, and using weak pale ink on white paper. I have to use a magnifying glass to read it which is ridiculous. The author puts together a very helpful book, then the publisher makes a stupid decision about the font and the ink so it is difficult to read. I have noticed this same thing in some other new books. I hope it is not the trend. I know the business schools now teach making money takes precedence over serving the customer. In this case, the publisher has done a disservice to both the author and to those who are buying her book.

About the Author
Brian Fagan is one of the leading archaeological writers in the world and an internationally recognized authority on world prehistory. He studied archaeology and anthropology at Pembroke College, Cambridge University, and then spent seven years in sub-Saharan Africa working in museums and in monument conservation and excavating early farming sites in Zambia and East Africa. He was one of the pioneers of multidisciplinary African history in the 1960s. From 1967 to 2003, he was Professor of Anthropology at the University of California, Santa Barbara, where he specialized in lecturing and writing about archaeology to wide audiences. He is now Emeritus.
Professor Fagan has written six best-selling textbooks apart from this book: Ancient Lives: An Introduction to Archaeology; In the Beginning; Archaeology: A Brief Introduction; People of the Earth;World Prehistory, all published by Prentice Hall―that are used around the world. His general books include The Rape of the Nile, a classic history of Egyptology; The Adventure of Archaeology;Time Detectives;Ancient North America;The Little Ice Age, The Long Summer, and Fish on Friday. Golden pharaohs, lost cities, grinning human skeletons: Archaeology is the stuff of romance and legend! Many people still think of archaeologists as adventurers and treasure hunters, like Indiana Jones of Hollywood movie fame seeking the elusive Holy Grail. This enduring image goes back to the late nineteenth century, when archaeologists like Heinrich Schliemann could still find lost civilizations like Troy and excavate three royal palaces in a week. Today, few, if any, archaeologists behave like Indiana Jones. They are scientists, not adventurers, as comfortable in an air-conditioned laboratory as they are on a remote excavation. The development of scientific archaeology from its Victorian beginnings ranks among the greatest triumphs of twentieth-century science. Archaeology has changed our understanding of the human experience in profound ways. A century ago, most scientists believed humans were no more than 100,000 years old. Today we know that our origins go back at least 5 million years. Our predecessors assumed the Americas were settled in about 8000 B.C. and that farming began around 4000 B.C. The fifth edition of World Prehistory has been revised throughout to reflect the latest advances in the field, and it includes suggestions by dozens of archaeologists and students who have taken the trouble to contact me after using previous editions.

This is an exciting time to be writing about archaeology. Many scientific advances are changing our perceptions about the past. Accordingly, the fifth edition is somewhat longer than its predecessors, with expanded coverage of major theoretical issues and the early civilizations. The fifth edition contains important new discoveries about early human evolution, the late Ice Age, and the origins of agriculture. New and updated coverage of the field appears in every chapter, with an up-to-date Guide to Further Reading at the end of the book along with a glossary of technical terms and one of archaeological sites and cultural names.

Updating and Rewriting

New perceptions of world prehistory. Chapter 1 includes important discussions of archaeology and alternative perspectives on the past, reflecting new thinking on this important topic.
Early human evolution. Chapter 2 discusses the latest advances in the study of human origins, including the latest fossil discoveries in Ethiopia and Kenya, among them Australopithecus garhi, a confusing and still enigmatic predecessor of humanity.
Origins of modern humans. Chapter 3 covers new research into the controversial issue of the earliest modern humans and fresh perceptions of Neanderthal ancestry and behavior.
Origins of food production. Chapter 5 incorporates expanded coverage of the latest theories on the origins of agriculture and animal domestication. Chapter 6, which describes the first farmers, incorporates new dates for early agriculture obtained from accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) radiocarbon dates and the results of new researches into the early farming village at Abu Hureyra, Syria, currently the earliest agricultural settlement in the world.
Origins of states and civilization. Chapter 8 has been expanded to include current theoretical debates on the origins of state-organized societies, including the issues of factionalism and charismatic leadership. Chapters 9 to 14 offer an up-to-date description and analysis of the first civilizations, with expanded coverage of ancient Egyptian civilization and of south and southeast Asian states. Chapters 12 and 13 offer more comprehensive analysis of highland and lowland Mesoamerican civilizations than in previous editions.
Revision and updating throughout. The entire text and Guide to Further Reading have been revised and updated on a page-by-page basis.

Three types of in-text boxes enhance the book, designed to amplify the narrative:

Man's origins and developments for the general reader

Man's innate curiosity with their past has given birth to sciences that attempt to satisfy such curiosity. Brian Fagan, an archaeologist himself, outlines brilliantly the major developments of humankind in prehistory, from that scientific perspective. Sophisticated theories and tools from disciplines such archaeology, biology, ecology, geology and even genetics and psychology are elaborated for the general reader. Utilising such diversity of disciplines, World Prehistory introduces to the reader, the developments of humankind- the origins, exodus and migration of man, food production and state formation- from the earliest times especially before written records were available.
Even before Fagan gets into details, he outlines the scope of the book and distinguishes the discipline of archaeology insofar as it is scientific, rigorous and it utilises tools and expertise from other disciplines. Throughout the book, there are scientific archaeological explanations in the form of theories, data and methodologies and at the very onset, the author derides the "romantic world of high adventure and exciting discovery" connected to pseudoarcheaology, which to him belongs to the "realms of religious faith and science fiction".
The book is divided into 4 parts in a generally chronological arrangement. The first part introduces to the reader the study of human prehistory with succinct explanations of the concepts of history, culture, space and time. Part 2 outlines scientific approaches to explain the origins of mankind and his relationships with other primates. The author draws evidence from geology, genetics and most importantly, paleoanthropology (the specialized study of human bone remains). Part 2 also presents one of the most controversial questions in anthropology, that is the path of migration of modern man. The author favours the "African exodus Theory"" and describes it in detail. Part 3 is a discussion of the birth of the modern world with special emphasis on the origins of food production, one of the hallmarks of ancient civilisations. The book culminates in Part 4, with very broad discussions on ancient civilisations in Western Asia, Africa, South, Southeast and East Asia and the Americas.
As an introductory book to world prehistory, it lacks detailed study of other aspects of prehistoric mankind's developments especially in the fields of language, religion and a new, exciting and only recently explored field of psychological archaeology, dealing with the minds and thinking of the earliest humans. The latter, the author concedes, must go beyond material remains and develop new ways to explore the minds of the earliest humans and understand why they developed the way they did.
However, as with most introductory books, World Prehistory can only describe its subject matter at surface level. However, after reading the book, I have obtained a general sense of the methods and theories that attempt to explain with the period of human history which was not recorded in writing. With so many theories, methods and even non-scientific explanations of mankind's ancient past, World Prehistory is a good book to introduce a reader to the latest and most widely accepted tools, methodologies and theories.

A very decent book

This book is not designed for the hardcore anthropology student as it doesn't delve into the extreme details of the subject, but it does give a very broad overview of the millions of years of human prehistory. Most of the time is spent talking about the journey from ape-like ancestors to the origin of food production and the large state-run societies that we have today. Therefore, when Fagan talks about specific cultures and societies he just gives an overview, he chooses to put most details to use describing why and how humans got to where they are today. Very good book is you want an effective and interesting introduction to human origins, but this isn't something that would be used for a 300 or 400 level class.

It saddens me to have to send this textbook back as trade-in so I can afford the textbooks for my next semester. The author explains in detail the origins, interactions and complexities of human prehistory without resorting to technical language. I've had my 14 year old cousin read this book and she not only understood it but loved it. 'I wish my school's books were this cool' she said. That alone speaks volumes for the book and the author.

About the Author
Graham McNeill has written more Horus Heresy novels than any other Black Library author! His canon of work includes Vengeful Spirit and his New York Times bestsellers A Thousand Sons and the novella The Reflection Crack’d, which featured in The Primarchs anthology. Graham’s Ultramarines series, featuring Captain Uriel Ventris, is now six novels long, and has close links to his Iron Warriors stories, the novel Storm of Iron being a perennial favourite with Black Library fans. He has also written a Mars trilogy, featuring the Adeptus Mechanicus. For Warhammer, he has written the Time of Legends trilogy The Legend of Sigmar, the second volume of which won the 2010 David Gemmell Legend Award, and the anthology Elves. Originally hailing from Scotland, Graham now lives and works in Nottingham.

Solid Writing, Excellent Characters

Ive never read any of Graham McNeills books before, but after this I might go back to reading "regular" 40K books by him, such as the Ultramarine trilogy.

Vengeful Spirit brings us back to the main Horus Heresy story line after much meandering of side-stories/side plots. Finally we're getting back into the war and one step closer to the battle for Terra. While I dont mind Black Library wanting to cash in on the serie's success, quite a number of the series has gone very far off the main story line.

The novel itself has very solid writing and the chapters are nicely spaced out; not too long, not too short. The characters act and behave like they have in the other novels, so there is good consistency that has been a problem with some of the other Primachs when written by different authors.

The story follows the planning of the assaination of Horus by inserting a team of "Knights in Grey" (very clever) on board the Vengeful Spirit to plant beacons and mark out important locations on board. There is some build up to this point as the team is assembled and there is conflict within the team, since it is made up of marines from different legions.
The story also attempts to tie in charactes from many of the other Horus Heresy novels.
This leads to my first of two issues which I will summarise below:-
1) If you have not been listening to any of the audio stories but have only been reading the novels, like myself, then there is a HUGE leap/gap of knowledge that you can only find by doing some research. As well as recurring characters from the first set of three novels. I spent a bit of time trying to find out who was who and from what novel. There is much missing infomation.
2)There is 1 odd inconsistancy in the story, +MINOR PLOT SPOILER+ in the end fight scene of the novel, Loken confronts abandon and a brawl ensues between the Knights and the Luna Wolves in a room, which Horus seems to have strangely disappeared and then reappears at the very very end of the fight. I can only presume he is eating popcorn and watching his minions fight for him, which is oddly out of character since the whole novel up to this point is about Horus getting involved.

So if you've never read any previous Horus Heresy novels, this is probably a terrible book to start, and it certainly rewards loyal fans rather than the casual reader. BUt if you are a loyal fan of the series, then this book will not disappoint.

Fulfilling His Destiny

In short, Vengeful Spirit is amazing.

The novel focuses on two quests: Warmaster Horus Lupercal's search for information that will ultimately lead to secret knowledge of how his father, the Emperor of Mankind, became as powerful as he is in the hopes of replicating that achievement; and a small strike team's mission to infiltrate the Warmaster's command ship (which is the novel's title) and mark a path through its interior by which to assassinate him.

Over the course of the tale, you see both the villain and the unlikely heroes in both positive and negative lights. Horus is a ruthless, genocidal madman, but he genuinely gives a damn about his friends and brother Primarchs, taking the time even to personally restore their weaponry to its full glory and talking with them about how they're holding together after harrowing ordeals. On the other end, the strike team (led by Garviel Loken, a character explored in Horus Rising) is trying to do the right thing that any sane person would do and help kill Horus, but his inner doubts are eating him up, and the task only becomes more difficult the closer he gets to his goal.

The bulk of the novel is the Battle of Molech, which is a war both on the world itself and in the stars above it. Orbital defense platforms, space cruiser clashes, boarding attacks, everything goes. It's a massive and brutal clash, and once the Traitor Legions hit the surface, things only get worse (their battles become so pitched that you'd swear all of the Godzilla monsters were hired by the Call of Duty game makers to star in a mega-war flick directed by a coked-out Micheal Bay). Giant robots, demons, super-soldiers, tanks, missiles, orbital bombardment, everything you can think of shows up (and yes, that's only the tip of the iceberg).

You really connect with not just Loken and Horus, but also a number of characters both attacking and defending Molech. Horus's personal council each display depth of character that makes you want to root for their survival, even when they're murderous jerks. Similarly, though so many of them die (and typically horribly), you want a bunch of the defenders to escape at least that battle they're caught up in, if only to die in defense of their home a little later. You want the attackers to win because they're trying to build a better Imperium for everyone and you want the defenders to prevail because their home is being destroyed.

By the conclusion of the story, even though the war is still on for some time to come, you have what you came looking for: a bloody, epic-scale clash between an Emperor-to-be and the planet standing in the way of his destiny. It's a thick read (over 600 pages), but you'll love every word of it and then some.

I wanted to like this book

I wanted to like this book, but it just isn't good. I've read most of the Horus Heresy, but this book is just not interesting. I got about 150 pages in and just couldn't read any more. The book says alot but nothing is happening. Maybe later it gets good but it takes way too long to get there to hold my attention. It also treats the reader badly, it references several events that happened in other books but if you haven't read those books or have simply forgotten it treats you like you read it yesterday with no reminders of these events.
