About the Author
Joanna Macy is a scholar, eco-philosopher, teacher and activist who has developed an international following in over 30 years as a speaker and workshop leader on Buddhist philosophy and the deep ecology movement. She is the author of 8 books including the original Coming Back to Life and Widening Circles, and she has produced a 3-DVD set entitled The Work that Reconnects.

Molly Young Brown has been a trainer, workshop leader and consultant for many years. The author of three previous books on spirituality and healing the environment, including Growing Whole: Self-Realization on an Endangered Planet, she teaches at the Graduate School of Holistic Studies at John F. Kennedy University, and is based in the San Francisco Bay area.

Coming Back to Life is one of the important books of our time. The view of the world and these times that Joanna and Molly offer is clear and compelling. And for me it is spot on. The exercises and processes they share are powerful. They offer us guidance for working with groups of people to stand awake in this world and to step forward to make a difference. Lately I've been using this framework as a core part of my work in Japan -- both in the 3.11.11 disaster area as well as in other parts of the country. The space it opens up for people is incredible. It is a space where we can dance with our grief and celebrate our joy. It is the space in which we create the future we want.

About the Author
Gregory N. Brown: In Greg Brown's book "The Savvy Flight Instructor" the author's love for flying is obvious in every chapter, as is his concern for the image of the flight instructor and flight school: that they perform the best they can to seek out, promote, and sustain the joy of flight for the good of the entire industry. In keeping with his role as general aviation advocate, Greg hosts the "Aviation Careers Forum" and the "New Pilots Forum" on America Online, and serves as a Contributing Editor for Flight Training magazine. He has entertained and educated aviation audiences as a speaker since 1990, most recently as presenter for NATA's acclaimed Flight School Training Manager Seminars.

An active practitioner of the noble art of flight instructing since 1979, Greg has also served as a professional pilot in both scheduled and corporate aviation, and flown extensively for pleasure and personal business. His teaching background also includes service as faculty member at Purdue University, regular presentations at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, and numerous professional seminars.

Greg Brown earned Bachelor's and Master's degrees at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where his graduate work included human-factors cockpit design at the Aviation Research Laboratory. He studied for two years at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and completed several advanced flight ratings at Purdue University. He holds an ATP pilot certificate with Boeing 737 type rating, and Flight Instructor certificate with all fixed wing aircraft ratings including glider. Greg also holds Advanced and Instrument Ground Instructor ratings, and has been active as a pilot since 1971. He was also honored with the "2000 Industry/FAA National Flight Instructor of the Year" award.

Greg's most recent publication is Flying Carpet: The Soul of an Airplane which includes stories from his long-running column in Flight Training magazine. Other popular aviation books by Greg include: The Turbine Pilot's Flight Manual, and Job Hunting for Pilots.

Mark J. Holt: Mark J. Holt, a pilot for a major airline who has logged over 15,000 hours in his 30 years of flying, holds an ATP certificate with Boeing 757/767 and BAE Jetstream 41 type ratings, and a Flight Engineer (Turbojet), and flight/ground instructor certificates. Mr. Holt soloed at age 16 and his professional flying career includes extensive flight and ground instructing experience and service as a check airman for a large Part 121 regional airline. Mark also served nine years as an electronics/radar technician for the U.S. Air Force Air National Guard. Mark is co-author of The Turbine Pilot's Flight Manual and Air Carrier Operations.

Book is good. Printing is...not so great, but readable.

The book itself is great. Very helpful for someone transitioning into turbine aircraft.
It covers a lot of subjects that a turbine pilot may need to know about but manages to do it in a very general way so that most of the book is helpful to you no matter what type of turbine aircraft you are going to be flying.

The only issue I have is that many of the pages are sort of...partway double printed? If that makes sense.
I've added a photo to show an example of what I'm talking about.

The first time I came across it, I thought my eyes were going blurry or I was having a stroke or something.
I looked away and nothing else looked doubled, then looked at the top of the page and it was fine. It was just the bottom 1/4 of the page or so.
I showed someone else to make sure I wasn't seeing things. They verified the partial double printing.

The double print issue isn't a HUGE deal, but be ready for it because it can be a little bit scary at first. After you realize what it is, then it's just annoying. It's not the entire book by any means, but I wish it wasn't there at all. I don't know if all of the books are like this, or just mine, but be prepared to see it so you don't get freaked out by it.

Required reading for trasitioning military pilots!

Better turbine engine explanations, descriptions, and diagrams than the military pubs I've been studying for the last 17+ years! This book and everything explained for the professional pilot are key for any military pilot to transition to the civilian market. I just got hired and my interviewer was very impressed with my turbine engine knowledge!

Good Starter Book

I am a Principal Senior Test & Durability Engineer in the Automotive business. I have MSEE & MSME degrees. We are basically making Autoparts out of metal. So metal fatigue, developing S/N curves, material properties, etc are extremely important.

I have a number of engineers working for me who have come to our firm within a few years of leaving school. I assign this book as a beginning course to them, for the first two to three weeks or so that they are working in my department. This is a get up to speed, learn the vocabulary and basic concepts and equations task. As the other reviewer noter, there ARE difficulties with the problems in the text, but it is a good basic start and nothing fundamentally unsound is presented. Along with this beginning material I also assign the SAE book by Wright, "Testing Automotive Materials and Components." It is an easy two day read. It is mostly a descriptive book, while Banantine, & Comer has much more quantitative material. Which I expect my department to be comfortable with.

Remember, Bannantine and Comer developed this book as notes for an upper level Undergrad Course while they were grad students at Univ. of Illinois.

For a much more rigourous treatment, I recommend Dowling's book, but that really is a graduate text, and can't be completed by an engineer in a couple of weeks working full time.

Your engineers should also be familiar with the material in the standard sophomore year Statics and Mechanics of Materials courses. Beer & Johnson's books are my choice, but McGill and King is also a good choice. Another choice for this material are the Schaum's Outlines. But Schaums doesn't derive or develop the equations. Schaums does not publish a metal fatigue book.

The other reviewer's criticism on a lack of statistical material is valid. But most undergraduate stat courses in engineer are more oriented towards production (XBar charts, etc.) or Digital Signal Processing material (for EE's). Graduate stat courses are more oriented towards design of experiments and research. Banantine & Comer could use a Chapter on Weibull and on Reliability and Confidence levels, along with the statistics needed to develop & use E/N, S/N, & Load Life curves. ASTM and SAE both have standards and texts giving examples for developing such curves. They are technically dense, but it is good for all engineers to learn how to extract usable information from such technically difficult materal.

Well Written but Problems with the Problems

I have used this text three times for teaching a fatigue course.
This text is well written. It is clear and understandable in the presentation of concepts. It covers the right amount of material for a one semester undergraduate elective course in fatigue, however, it's too basic for gradutate level study. The three apporoaches to fatigue life analysis (stress-life, strain-life, and crack growth) are clearly explained along with a cursory but useful coverage of Linear Elastic Fracture Mechanics. Examples are clearly laid out. One nice feature is the summary of important concepts and equations at the end of each chapter. Another nice feature is chapter 6 which compares and reviews the strenths and limits of applicability of each method.
A full chapter should be added regarding the statistical considerations of fatigue analysis (this important topic is completely skipped). The notation used is inconsistent and confusing at times, particularly with regard to stress/strain amplitude versus range. The homework problems are sub-par. There are relatively few numerical problems compared to typical texts. There are incompletely defined problems and misleading/confusing problems. This is the weakest part of the text.

Buy a Different Book

I am not a fan of this book, particularly because of the end of chapter problems. The examples in the text do not do a good job of preparing the reader for these exercises. In general (not just the in text examples), the explanations tend to skip steps and gloss over important points. The book is very small and does not contain enough information to make it worth the price tag.

Sandra A. Jacobson, M.D., is a Senior Scientist at Banner Sun Health Research Institute in Sun City, Arizona. In the past, she worked in Consultation/Liaison Psychiatry and Inpatient and Outpatient Psychiatry at Tufts Medical School and New England Medical Center in Boston, as Director of the EEG Laboratory at Shattuck Hospital in Jamaica Plain, Massachusetts, and in Consultation/Liaison Psychiatry at Brown Medical School and The Miriam Hospital in Providence, RI. She is board certified by the ABPN in Psychiatry, with Added Qualifications in Geriatric Psychiatry, Psychosomatic Medicine, and (formerly) Clinical Neurophysiology (EEG and EMG).

The "battle for right-of-way" in the 1920s saw the demise of streetcars and transformed America's streets from a multiuse resource for socializing, commerce, and public mobility into exclusive arteries for private automobiles. The subsequent destruction of urban transit systems and the post-World War II suburbanization of America, enabled by the Interstate Highway System and the GI Bill, forever changed the way Americans commuted.

But today, for the first time in history, and after a hundred years of steady increase, driving is in decline. Younger Americans increasingly prefer active transportation choices like walking or cycling and taking public transit, ride-shares, or taxis. This isn't a consequence of higher gas prices, or even the economic downturn, but rather a collective decision to be a lot less dependent on cars.

Great lessons from one of the nation's most prominant traffic engineers on congestion, sprawl and why we need to do something about them. As a Cleveland, Ohio cyclist, I found it insightful, but as a taxpayer I found it compelling. We can't afford unbridled highway expansion, when we can't maintain and repair what we already have.

This is a brilliant book about the history and future of transportation in cities and their suburbs. The book includes a few somewhat rude jokes, and I hope that they will be deleted in next versions, but overall I learnt many interesting and surprising facts.

Teacher and screenplay doctor Truby (responsible for popular screenwriting software Blockbuster) brings his complicated but time-tested story development system to print for the first time, a 22-point process that's more thorough-"an extremely precise map of your entire plot" that "shows you the most dramatic way to tell your story"-but also more unwieldy than the traditional "three-act" technique. For example, the first seven steps Truby introduces apply to structure: develop "weakness and need" and "desire" in your hero, give him an "opponent" and a "plan" for overcoming that opponent, then throw in a "battle" that leads to "self-revelation" and, finally, a "new equilibrium." Chapters build on each other, fleshing out these steps with a number of terms and concepts (character types include hero, main opponent, ally, fake-ally opponent and fake-opponent ally) that alternate between cagey (the "character web") and confusing (the nearly indistinguishable "designing principle," "theme line" and "moral argument"). Further frustration arises in Truby's examples, old movies retrofitted with his techniques (most notably The Godfather and Tootsie) rather than a script that has actually been put through Truby's paces (or, even better, a new script invented just to demonstrate the steps). Following Truby's complex system may yield a memorable screenplay, but writers without great patience may find it more trouble than it's worth.

Best by far for novel or screen writers

I have spent a lot of money on screenwriting and novel writing books. I have had recommendations for books that were different, or foolproof; formula based, character based, plot based, etc. In my experience, the screenwriting books do it better than the novel writing ones, but it still takes some searching to find something really useful. I first used John Truby's book for a screenplay I was writing. I followed the first few chapters religiously and discovered I was solving problems I didn't even realize existed, creating deeper characters and stronger arcs all as part of the process. It wasn't formulaic and didn't give me a standard plot, but it did adhere to a few fundamental truths about story and character that cannot be ignored. As with any book, you need to use your brain and alter the rules to fit your story, but trust me, don't stray too far. It's very easy for someone to think that their character or story is "too good" or "above" the rules of conventional story telling but trust me, even the most obscure stories follow this basic format (if they are any good). It gives you relatable examples from a variety of movies, and the exercises are actually practical (none of the tired clichés such as "write about an experience you had where..." or "tell a story using these key words as a starting point"). All the exercises are specifically designed to help you develop YOUR story, not just any random plot.

Because of the success I had with this method, I used the book again for planning my novel. Now, with a novel there are a few changes that need to be made. More happens in a novel, and of course things like "the audience reveal" are generally strictly cinematic tools and don't translate well to literature. However, I found the same successes with it for novel writing. Same problems being solved, same richness added to the plot and character.

I would recommend this book to anyone writing something with plot. I bought this originally in paperback and purchased the kindle version so that I could just carry around my iPad. Use in conjunction with your favourite other texts (I like Blake Snyder's "Save the Cat" beat sheet for pacing. I cross referenced this with my favourite novels from the genre I was writing in to find the appropriate pacing for the novel).

There is no such thing as a magic book that will make you a great writer, BUT if you have skills and a great idea, this will help you workshop and develop the idea to give you something you actually start writing.

Technical To the Nth Degree

THE ANATOMY OF STORY is not for “pantsers” (writers who write without an outline). It’s an extremely technical manual for people who like to have their whole story, including every plot point, character change, motif and themeplanned out ahead of time.

I found it to be similar in many ways to Dr. Stanley D. Wiliam's treatise on the subject, THE MORAL PREMISE: Harnessing Virtue and Vice for Box Office Success.

The problem for me is, like Dr. Williams, Truby’s method strips story down to bare mechanics, bleeding all the life out of it. I found his method tedious, making things more complex than they need to be. He does show what elements all stories have in common. The problem is, he never explains how to put those elements into practice.

As an author, I'm glad I read it, but I'll probably never read it again.

Bought this on the recommendation of two writing friends and my regret is that they didn't speak up sooner. I've found all of Truby's advice and guidance useful, and quickly found his 7 Key Steps to Story Structure invaluable. My only quibble is a wish that I could understand the material better. There are insights which I grasped easily, but other sections that require squinting and pondering. Not because Truby makes the information difficult, but because I thought I knew more about story structure than I actually do. The book's subtitle, 22 Steps to Becoming a Master Storyteller, should be believed. If you are interested in mastering the craft of writing, then this book should be in your library.

Specifically what other writers may find useful is Truby's explanations of: character web, identifying story challenges and problems, four-corner opposition, and placing characters' values in conflict. There's a great deal more, but those topics have benefited me the most at this time.

About the Author
Professor Bart Baesens is a professor at KU Leuven (Belgium), and a lecturer at the University of Southampton (United Kingdom). He has done extensive research on big data & analytics, customer relationship management, web analytics, fraud detection, and credit risk management. His findings have been published in well-known international journals (e.g. Machine Learning, Management Science, IEEE Transactions on Neural Networks, IEEE Transactions on Knowledge and Data Engineering, IEEE Transactions on Evolutionary Computation, Journal of Machine Learning Research, ...) and presented at international top conferences. Excellent book for practioners in the field of data-analysis for fraud detection

I work as a Data Scientist for a government organisation in the field of law enforcement.
This is the best book I read so far targeted to practioners in fraud detection and prevention using Big Data.

It is very well written, and contains both chapters on predictive datamodelling and on social network analysis.
And the way these both techniques can be combined to predict fraud. I specially liked the chapter on Social Network Analysis.
It is applicable in my field, with networks containing both possibile fraudulent companies and individiuals responsible for the behaviour of the companies they are involved in as employers.

The book contains a very practical chapter on descriptive analysis and the way outliers can be analysed to discover possible fraudulent subjects.

I enjoyed the chapter about post-processing. In my organisation we are still finding out what is the best way to evaluate the strength of our predictive models, and this chapter is very helpful. It gives for example advice how to backtest a model which is already used in practice.

The book is written in a way that people without a heavy mathematical background can understand it. At the same time it is challenging and introducing a lot of the latest techniques in the field of fraud detection.

I recommend this book to everybody who is interested in making sense of big datasets to discover fraud. The next editions deserves a colour print in my opinion.

Shallow Coverage of Broad Areas of Advanced Knowledge - Not for the Uninitiated

I've written reviews for several books on Amazon, and not until I reviewed this book were any of my reviews ever rejected. This is my second attempt to review this book.

Contrary to the review by Gerard Meester (who from his dearth profile appears may have an affiliation with one or more of the authors), this is far from "the best book" available to practitioners in fraud detection and prevention using Big Data. The best book in this area is hands down Financial Forensics Body of Knowledge (Wiley Finance), which covers hundreds of analytical techniques for fraud detection in a manner understandable to most people with a modicum of education

To its credit, the book does cover some rather esoteric statistical fraud detection methods not covered in other texts, but it provides only brief coverage of these advanced statistical techniques, apparently for those already learned in the data sciences.

To its detriment, the book does not provide a clear presentation of the application of the advanced formulae in a manner that is understandable to the uninitiated. It would be very nice to see the authors provide this material in a manner that is more detailed so that the reader can work through the methods without the need to resort to the plethora of references at the end of each chapter in order to gain an understanding of the material.
